2 coin operated stages with 16mm film loops and sound 2004
Art and Smut - The same performance can be considered art or pornography depending on venue and cost and therefore the audience that attends the performance. The identical 16mm film loops used in this installation are from a 1960's porno film. I isolated a frame of the film that depicts a woman from the waste up, and altered the image to give it a mechanical movement. Art is projected on a refinished stage with new gold leafing and velvet curtains. This stage costs 25 cents and is accompanied by applause with "bravo".
Smut is projected on a neglected, dirty stage. The curtains smell like smoke and are dirty. This stage costs 5 cents and is accompanied by a soundtrack from a strip club. With the insertion of the appropriate coin in either stage's mechanism, the curtains open and close, the projectors operate and the sound begins. |
